During the full-scale war, about 50,000 Ukrainians lost their limbs as a result of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine.

his is the assessment given by the world’s largest manufacturer of prostheses — the German company Ottobock — and its medical partners.

As a result of this, there is a huge burden on the Ukrainian medical system and prosthetics centers.

Cooperation between the Government of Estonia and the BGV Charitable Foundation began in December 2022, and its result was a program for prosthetics for Ukrainians, mainly military personnel, who have complex injuries and amputations.

Prosthetics is carried out in Tallinn on the basis of one of the most modern hospitals in Estonia – Ida-Tallinn Keskhaigla (East Tallinn Central Clinical Hospital).

The medical institution is one of the largest in the country: it includes seven clinics, and the staff includes more than 2,500 employees.

Within the framework of the program, patients are manufactured and fitted with state-of-the-art bionic electronic prostheses free of charge, which are individually adjusted to the needs of a specific user, which ensures full symmetry and naturalness of gait (for prosthetics of the lower limbs).

Such prostheses are equipped with shock absorbers and a number of moving elements for increased physical activity, and also have a special mobile application that makes it possible to switch from walking to various sports modes, thus ensuring high comfort of use and level of motor activity.

As of January 2024, 23 Ukrainians have already received state-of-the-art electronic prostheses within the program.

The photo book was created as part of a special project of the Ukrainian Charitable Foundation BGV and media solutions “Rubrika” as a way to express gratitude to the Republic of Estonia for its systematic support and with great hope for the continuation of the prosthetics program in 2024, so that 25 more Ukrainians could return to their usual and active lives.

These stories are proof that, thanks to our Estonian partners, we are doing important things that bring faith back to life. Despite the trials that each of them had to go through because of the war. Our duty today is to become a reliable shoulder for those who stood up for us. And our big goal is to keep the number of stories with happy endings growing».
